Mathematics glossary

A growing mathematics glossary with algebra, geometry, core formulas, theory, practice, articles, and an equations test.

Core mathematics formulas

Use a formula after identifying the topic and its conditions. The short notes below help connect the notation to its meaning.

Quadratic equation

D = b² − 4ac; x = (−b ± √D) / 2a

For the equation ax² + bx + c = 0, where a ≠ 0.

Linear function

y = kx + b

k defines the slope of the line, and b is its y-intercept.

Pythagorean theorem

a² + b² = c²

For a right triangle, where c is the hypotenuse.

A simple revision path

Start with a short explanation, solve several problems without hints, and then use the test to check whether the topic is ready for the next step.
